This is a great book! A very accessible, readable guide to the various Sufi orders present in North America, their differences, their traditions and particularities and what ideas they have in common. Dickson has interviewed the leaders of the Sufi orders and asked them about their relation to Islam, whether they admit Non-Muslims or whether they are Islamic or not , and about many other aspects. Highly recommended for anyone who is trying to gain an overview on what forms of Sufism are being practiced in the US.

Excellent book. For its purposes, it's more or less comprehensive and uses extensive footnotes to guide the curious reader further. The prose is accessible and the ethnographic component complements the book well. Great job probing the relationship between Sufism and Islam. Imagining Sufism detached from Islam certainly proves odd and disingenuous to a certain mindset but no matter what conclusion readers draw in this regard, Dickson won't let them get away with a simplistic understanding of how Western Sufi movements approach the matter.
