I expected the book to be a bit more balanced and found it to be almost soft porn in places. It is so one sided and shows this man to be a complete cad with no redeeming qualities. I finished it but felt that it was not worth my time. The author was seeing how awful she could portray Eamon Casey. She portrays herself as a needy, non-religious woman ripe for the picking, sort of a victim. I would be interested to see the other side of this story.

Very interesting but only confirms what I have thought all along by not permitting marriage within the priests. I'm sure there are many other 'secrets' within the Roman Catholic faith which may eventually come to light.

Powerful sad, and shaming for this bishop and abuse of his power.

This is another unhappy issue. When I ordered this item I thought I would receive a book as it was for a gift to a friend of mine, the we realized that it was not a book and I did not even apply to return me the money. The only thing that I do, I will never buy anything at Amazon. At that time I just came back to the US after 9 years living in another country, so I did not know what Kindle means. It was my fault and even friends of mine told me to claim the money, but I said to myself never again and I payed for not informed myself.

Undoubtedly a compelling story, but could have done with being edited - frankly, endless details of the sex life of a middle-aged man is fairly unedifying and unnecessary to the story, and it strays into Mills and Boon territory from time to time.I'm not a Catholic, but I think that any woman who persists in an affair with a high-up celibate clergyman, gets pregnant without his assent or commitment, and then expects him to do the decent thing, is pursuing a relationship that never had any future to begin with, and that someone more stable and with more self-respect would have walked away from straight away. That said, I found Bishop Casey's flirtation with the young and damaged Annie creepy in the extreme, and on a par with sexual abuse coming from a person in a position of responsibility.Feel sorry for the boy with such unthinking and unstable parents.

I remembered this story when it hit the news years ago, simply for the fact that the son, Peter, is about my age and in fact was born just a few weeks before I was (in 74). The church was just around the corner from being rocked to the core with the sex scandals which now seem so commonplace, this seeming so otherwise innocent compared to what we would eventually hear. And still, all these years later, we have no answers except to say that we made a mistake of some kind centuries ago, but we do little to nothing to change it except to simply walk away from the church.Annie Murphy had just gotten divorced and was looking for some R & R or some kind of spiritual journey when she traveled to Ireland in 73. Instead, she got something she didn't expect in the least, to meet the Bishop of Ireland and have an affair with him. The affair was not a one time encounter, but lasted months! The detail of their affair are for the readers who are interested in those things, because sex sells. The issue of avoidance seems to be there which I can't seem to really accept. She said there was some talk about birth control of some kind, but he just said "Let's hope it doesn't come up". When she got pregnant, he turned on her, perhaps angry at himself that he let this happen and instead of being an adult, accepting his role in it, and taking his lumps, he turns on her. I admit, I am angry with him for how he behaved with her and their son. He was the one who came knocking on her door initially, and even though this is a pseudo-Thorn Birds type tragic love story, she could have said no as well. The professional is always blamed in said situations legally. If he were a therapist and the patient threw themselves buck naked at them, the therapist is to cover them with a blanket, march them out of the room and say "You need to see another therapist, not me." Anne should have taken the role of the fictional therapist in the beginning.Annie returned to the States with her son, Peter, and simply lives simply as she can. She goes on in her book to go off about the Catholic Church and the hypocricy of their rules and regulations for priests as well as followers. Is she right? Well, yes, there are a million and a half contradictions to these things. But you, as the priest or believer, must decide if you do or don't believe in these rules. If you do, then go in head first and never look back. If not, get over it and move on. Easier said than done for a follower, but not for a priest. We need to change this celibacy doctrine, and perhaps more than ever, as the church is a dying flame in the world today for perhaps this reason above all others. As for the bishop, he did a bad thing in how he treated Annie and their son. He resigned, disgraced and without ceremony from the church to do missionary work in Latin America. I wonder if he ever apologized to Annie and Peter.Call me crazy, and there are certainly a lot of layers to this story, but there are women out there who do pursue relationships with priests. Wanting something they can never have or something unattainable. This type of thinking is sick minded and they really REALLY need to see a therapist about something like that. I just Googled Annie Murphy as to what she is doing today. She has moved on, her son is nearly 40, and the bishop is in a nursing home with dementia. Murphy, however, seems like a very screwed up person to begin with.
