Shearer does a fine job of trying to make sense of a woman of vast contradictions: a born engineer who also believed in astrology, a beautiful woman who felt trapped by her beauty but who had disastrous plastic surgery to keep her beautiful, a loving mother who essentially abandoned one of her children, and in constant need of money yet she'd misplace thousands of dollars in jewelry.Shearer showcases all these contradictions, and Lamarr emerges as a complex, interesting, flawed yet oddly likable woman. His review of her film career and the inability of MGM to do for her what they did for Greer Garson was quite interesting - essentially, even though her films did quite well, MGM needed Lamarr to be a bigger box office star than she turned out to be. Who knew?Add the entire spread spectrum story, with a genuine Lamarr patent, her best-selling pseudo-autobiography that was as scurrilous and false as the Shulman biography of Harlow, the shoplifting nightmare and the recognition of her work and renewed attention to her after decades out of the limelight, and Shearer ties it all together soberly and truthfully.

I just finished reading "BEAUTIFUL, The Life of Hedy Lamarr." I must say I am really impressed with the thorough research that went into this book and the sensibility of its author in telling us all there is to know about the life of Hedy Lamarr. I am only 64, and Hedy Lamarr had already reached the end of her film career when I started going to the movies. I was lucky, however, still quite young, to get hold of old magazines that belonged to my mother and come in contact with photos of the great movie stars from the thirties, forties and fifties. And there she was, the most beautiful of them, Hedy Lamarr. I only got to see SAMSON AND DELILAH in my late teens, and ALGIERS and ZIEGFELD GIRL much later. Today, looking back, and knowing the particulars of Hedy's life, I can only say that I admire both the woman and the actress. I am saddened by the way the world treated her. She was far from perfect, she made many mistakes, especially with regard to her romantic attachments, but she deserved more respect and recogntion from her peers and critics in general. I highly recommend this book to all those who love and admire Hedy Lamarr.

about the life of Hedy Lamarr. . .For all her fans, and there are still many of us. . .(just look up her name on the internet), this is the book we have been waiting for. When we were kids, and teenagers, and even grown men (and envious women!), how we would patiently wait for her to appear. Who could ever forget her dramatic entrance in WHITE CARGO, purring, "I am Tondelayo!" . . .and her emphatic declaration in SAMSON AND DELILAH, "No man leaves Delilah. . ." as though anyone would want to!!!! or her dramatic entrance in ZIEGFIELD GIRL. No one doubted for a moment who Tony Martin was crooning to when he sang, "You Stepped out of a Dream." No one really cared whether she could act or not. . .I think she could! and no one really cared what the plot of the movie was. . .if Hedy was starring, we went in droves... and we were not disappointed.Stephen Michael Shearer relates all the familiar details of Miss Lamarr's life, but also reveals tidbits of a more personal nature after she left Hollywood and retired, first to New York and then to Florida. One cannot help but feel sad to witness her later years. . . as she tumbled from the heights of stardom to being so unknown that even her neighbors did not know her real identity. Yes,indeed, she was surely right, "Once one has tasted stardom, everything else is poverty!" Fortunately, she had friends who loved her anyway for the real person she was, despite her faults and failings. . .If you are a Hedy Fan, read this book and you will not be disappointed, and if you are not, you will become one! You will immmediately run out, find all her movies available on DVD, view them once again, and be forever convinced that indeed, she really was "the fairest of them all," during the Golden Years of Hollywood of course. . .but indeed, she is still able to turn men's heads today, and make women wonder. . . view all her movies once again

Hedy was a very sweet and smart woman. i found this book very helpful in understanding her psyche. She was beautiful, charming and always full of high octane energy. I think the one thing she desired above it all was love and that seemed to have eluded her all her life. I pray for her that she finds the love and peace she missed in life..
