Josh Lanyon always provides a good, solid story and this book is no different. A nephew comes home to help his favorite aunt cope. This books hits all the highlights of a good mystery, has good characters (each with their own personality and quirks) and a good conclusion. You will like the book from beginning to end. It was great fun!
A haunted mansion, complete with 25 bedrooms and a ballroom collecting dust. A revenge-seeking ghost. A suspicious death. An evil secret. A mysterious gardener. A sweet, elegant aunt and a crazy step-aunt. Toss a couple of disgruntled servants into the mix. Add a huge dollop of remarkably accurate psychic, um, I mean spiritualist. Our hero steps into this maelstrom. Artemis is a theater critic living in New York. He’s come back to answer his aunt’s request for help. He sees what is going on and sets about trying to fix it. Pretty soon his aunt wants him to leave. She doesn’t take kindly to his “suggestions†that the spiritualist is a fake, the step-aunt should be sent away and the gardener’s references should be checked. The writing is superb. Scenes and characters are painted with care and the atmosphere is palpable. You may want to reconsider reading it in a darkened room late at night. Or make a point of reading it in a darkened room late at night.Séance on a Summer’s Eve is a delightful throwback to classic Lanyon. Other recent books are equally well-written but the endings felt rushed. This book has no such problems. One mystery, one complicated and well-presented solution.
Artemis and Seamus are officially my new favorite book couple. She doesn't beat you over the head with what's going on. Pay attention and you'll be just fine. The mystery, as always, isn't so complex you just don't get it. There are no plot gaps. The dialogue is realistic, snarky and just what you want it to be. If you want a nice day spent with some kooky folks, a budding romance and a (hopefully) new interesting series, this is for you. One complaint is if Artemis is 30 and his aunt was in her 20's when he went to live with her, she can't be as old as he acts like she is. There is a little m/m action, but not a lot and it's not gratuitous.
4.5 stars and highly recommendedJosh Lanyon writes M/M mystery romance mashups better than almost anyone. She sets the tone for each book immediately (some are comedic, some sentimental, some hard-boiled) and expertly maintains that tone throughout. This book is a nice balance of nice amateur sleuthing and flirting between the MCs. Most of the secondary characters interesting, and the plotting is nice and tight. In a nutshell, a gay nephew returns home (a trope Lanyon loves) and trouble’s afoot. Stakes are pretty low and this is more cozy than suspenseful. This feels like a stand-alone an definitely worth reading if you’re a Josh Lanyon fan.
Sounds like a Lanyon book for sure! I liked this one. It felt more like classic Lanyon. Hope there is more of Artemus and Seamus to come. They were great company!😊
Mystery story so well written that you don’t want to stop reading. A lovely M/M relationship grows while the various protagonists try to discover why they seem fearful and haunted.
I think my favorite thing about this novel was the wide variety of characters. I love Artemus’ sass and levelheadedness, Cassidy’s charm, Liana’s craziness, etc.Everyone had a very unique personality and it was so fun to see the interactions between characters. This book definitely gave me a fun, small-town vibe, even though it all takes place inside the same house (albeit, a big house). It kind of reminded me of Gilmore Girls in a way, in the sense that the background characters have so much personality and add so much to the story.I also loved the LGBT representation, and I believe that most of Lanyon’s other books center around LGBT characters as well.I wasn’t crazy about the plot. I mean, I enjoyed the story, and was never really wishing for it to be over, but it just felt like there was something missing. I also didn’t really like the way that the mystery unfolded, and I wasn’t really left satisfied with the explanation of what was happening. My main issue with this book would probably be the pacing. It just felt like in the first half, things seemed to drag on and it was pretty repetitive. After arriving at Green Lanterns, it seems like Artemus has the same conversation with his aunt over and over again. I kind of wish those conversations were edited down a bit more so that the story could have progressed faster.Fortunately, things do pick up in the second half of the novel, and I couldn’t put it down at certain points.Despite my issues with the plot, I think Lanyon is a great writer. I loved the way the characters were written, and the novel did hold my attention for the most part.
Was a great read, the subject done very well however I was expecting/anticipating a little more wrap up at the end, even if it was part of a news report on the radio ...
