To start with, this is a fun read if you are interested in ships and adventure. But.....it has issues. First off you need to have some knowledge of ships for this to make sense. Not everyone knows that big ship engines use air to start - not batteries - and that they start in gear. When it is running, you are going. This makes it hard to sneak off with a large ship, but if you don't know this it isn't obvious from the book. Then there is the writing style. The author clearly does not make the majority of his income from writing. It goes basically one chapter per ship repossesed and every chapter is like see ship, form plan, sneak off with ship, end of chapter. There is an odd detour into cropdusting and teaching school that does not fit. And then near the end the captain seems to become kind of a jerk. He is irate that the captain onboard a ship is not enthusiastic over sneaking off to escape unjust port charges. The captain, quite logically, does not want to risk jail to help the owner of the ship out of a dispute when the owner will likely wash his hands and deny all knowledge if they are caught. He threatens to have the captain killed (REALLY) to get him to cooperate. Then they get in a storm and the captain wants to turn around for shelter. The author takes over the ship and forces them to keep going. The original capt quite rightly did not want this rusty old wreck in a bad storm and the ship almost sinks because of it.SPOILER (sort of)In the last few pages the author's wife runs off, his daughter dies, and his house gets wrecked by Katrina. The end.Way to end a book :(

Captain Hardberger has written a number of books relating his adventures on the high seas, and in the lowlands surrounding those seas. He makes his living doing any number of "odd jobs" in the maritime business, but often liberating seized ships from corrupt Caribbean regimes.=== The Good Stuff ===*Captain Max writes well, and I enjoy reading his narratives. They are reasonably well written, although they can get carried away with themselves. Perhaps the best way to describe the writing is to say that I have read all of his books within a single day, and this one was no exception. It is so easy to get caught up in the narrative.* Hardberger captures the danger and drama of his adventures quite well. I honestly got the feeling that I was accompanying him on some of his adventures, and felt the back of my neck rise on a couple occasions.=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===* It might just be the order I read them in, but this was the first time I got fatigued reading one of Hardberger's narratives. Many of the stories are similar, and sometimes they can be come a bit tiring to read. My own feeling is that while all of his books are quite good, Freighter Captain was the best of Captain Max's efforts.* As even the author admits, some of the tales are a bit enhanced. That is OK, I read these more for entertainment than knowledge, but it may bother some readers.* Maps are problematic. Many of the stories rely on an understanding of the harbor configuration to really make sense, and it is just about impossible to find a reasonably detailed map, online or otherwise, of Haitian ports.=== Summary ===In spite of its flaws, I enjoyed the book. It was enough to launch me off on an afternoon's adventure, and that is really all I expected of it. If you are an "true-stories" adventure fan, or like drama on the seas, you will enjoy any of Hardberger's books.

This book deals with a subject matter I am very unfamiliar with (ships/shipping, the high seas, etc.). It had the potential to get very confusing with the jargon (I couldn't tell the difference between aft and stern) but the author wrote simply and created suspenseful scenes, especially for the first half of the book. Overall, I learned a lot about a topic which I now find interesting but previously knew nothing about.The only con I would say (and the reason I say good and not great) is that despite there being several different methods of seizing ships, getting through customs, etc., the book is fairly episodic, moving from story to story with little to tie them together. As this is a memoir of sorts, I guess that could be expected, but toward the end I certainly wasn't feeling the irrepressible urge to continue turning the pages.As I said, good book, interesting, a few times had me at the edge of my seat, but towards the end was just a little "meh."

My vote for "Most Interesting Man" goes to Max Hardberger. His memoir proves the aphorism that "when it gets dark bad things happen". Max is a self-educated man who became an experienced sea captain, a skilled crop-dusting pilot, and a successful correspondence-schooled lawyer (passing the California Bar in his first attempt) while also earning a world-wide reputation for successfully retrieving vessels stolen or corruptly seized from their rightful owners. His tales of using ruses and stealth to retrieve the vessels are legendary. He loves good beer, but never drinks too much. He remains faithful to his wife by skillfully avoiding the seductive traps of beautiful women. He is an honorable man who performs deeds to do good and not for the reward. He is indeed "The Most Interesting Man". A fun read, my friend. Recommended.

Max, you've earned my deepest respect.This is a collection of amazing tales of stealing back stolen ships, and risking life and limb, written by a man who clearly has a zeal for adventure and daring. Max is a man who has been hired numerous times to rescue stolen ships from literal pirate bays, negotiating deals, and even dealing in East German planes. His knowledge is vast, and his experiences fascinating.Max is not a professional author, but his stories are heartfelt and real, and can whisk one away into the world of shipping and piracy, lawyers and outlaws. Raw and real, I recommend this for those who wish to take a peek into his little known world.
