"'Tis the same story as always," she said. "A dark night. Thundering horses. Men riding, clad in yellow jerkins, with spears raised. With one giant blaze, my family was gone. Burned in their beds. My father killed trying to defend them. I alone escaped. I can still feel the heat on my face. Hear the screams and the cracking of timber as the house collapsed. The smell of ash drifting across the moors."This book is anything but the "same story as always." It's not just full of the tender moments that come after painful experiences, but unusual characters like Angus' brother, who is mute. And Margaret's companion, a loyal girl with somewhat ambiguous "witch powers."Set during the time when raiders used to raise and rob settlements along the borders of Scotland and England, Margaret has nothing left except her dark memories of the night her family was killed by raiders and she was homeless and alone. As with all plans for revenge, hers are foiled by one man who believes she could have more in life. With a few elements of fantasy and strong characterization, this is exactly the kind of book I love to read. At one point, I even teared up, which rarely happens to me.Strongly recommended. No content warning, completely clean.
SEX: none. Some very appropriate kissing.PROFANITY: None.WRITING QUALITY: blahI had high hopes for this book. Meg, a victim of reivers, is left with a curse. She can hear the thoughts of the people she touches. This is the premise for a very interesting story. Unfortunately, I was never able to connect with Meg.I understand that Meg’s background makes her prickly and aloof. But it also makes it hard for a reader to bond with her. Her whole, singleminded purpose is to avenge her family’s death. She spends the entire book plotting to this end. And in the end, her focus becomes a bit tedious. I ended up skipping 1/3 of the book and didn’t seem to miss any important details.Angus is a likable enough character, though I can’t see why Meg appeals to him. She treats him poorly. He’s gentleman enough to see to her needs initially, but I can’t understand why he keeps coming back. How does he manage to fall in love with a character that I don’t even like? That is the hard sell of this book. Since I am unable to connect with the main character or feel any empathy, I don’t FEEL the story with the character. I should feel murderous and hateful, along with Meg. I should feel desperate and afraid. I should feel drawn to Angus and conflicted. I suppose I did feel walled off, like Meg, but that’s the closest I came to sharing her emotions. Mostly I felt bored. On another matter....I tired of the constant reminder that Meg was cursed, and that she needed to avenge her family. I felt it could have been presented in a less overbearing manner. And please, more show and less tell. For example, in the first chapter, instead of telling us that Meg can’t touch someone or she’ll see their thoughts, why not have someone touch her, and let the reader experience the curse with her? At that point we’d understand why she wears gloves without having to be told.Further into the book, Meg shares her memories of the night her family is killed. Here’s an opportunity to really recruit the reader onto her team, make them empathize with her, but it’s a distant telling of the story. She doesn’t “show†us the event, merely tells it.The idea of this book is sound, and it’s fun to read about the Scottish countryside, though I didn’t get much of a feel for it. I really liked the dog, the “witch†and Agnus. But, I felt like the story was told to me so I didn’t get to experience it. Disappointing.
I would say that this book was a fun read. Set during the Tudor age on the border of Scotland and England, this story whisks you away. The author combines history and romance with some paranormal flavor. Not at all realistic but enjoyable just the same. The only complaint is that it lacked consistency with the old English verbiage inserted here and there. It made those bits of dialogue a bit disjointed. However, the story was entertaining and fanciful. This book is a great escape from reality and held my interest. It was a fast read, and I did enjoy the mind vacation that I was on while reading it.
Fast paced story with wonderful characters to love and to hate. Excellent narrative that helps the reader to feel as though you are with the action.
Good plot, filled with lessons for life! Tender romance! I enjoyed reading from start to finish! You will enjoy it as well!
I loved this book. The story was excellent and the characters were well developed. I will definitely be reading more of her novels.
