Teach yourself in 24 hours series has been very successful for quick learning. This is my 5th book from same series on different topic. I read multiple books on Hadoop and found this topic is very detailed and complex to get handle on its ecosystem. This book is well organized with core concepts of Hadoop, installations and uses, understanding and learning Hadoop ecosystem like Spark, Pig, Hive, elastic search ect. I am enjoying each chapter and following step by step installations, configurations and quizzes.Author did great job to organize the contents and keeping chapters focused on key components of Hadoop with good exercises.

The book seems decent but I am finding it very difficult to locate the source code for the samples in the book. Very frustrating.-------Downgrading to 1 star after spending the week going back and forth with customer service for the publisher to try to find out where the content for the exercises can be found. The preface of the book mentions that the content can be found in an AWS S3 bucket, but offers no details on how to get to this. I had to take a screen shot of this and send to support, after which they told me to contact Amazon since it is in AWS.Every other book I have ever bought has made it quite easy to find downloads for exercises. But for this book, it seems impossible making the book essentially useless.

This book is a wonderful read for people who need to understand this highly technical topic, for interaction and discussion with SAs, Architects, Infrastructure and more. Exercises allow some hands on. And topics give insight into both the Cloudera and Hortonworks distributions. Content is very accessible!

Great book for an overview and to dip your toes in the Hadoop world. One issue, where do you get the data files that are mentioned in the chapters, .e.g Chapter 11 on Hive talks about Sales and Customer table, but there is no mentioned of the data files needed to load into these tables.

If you expect more than a superficial Hadoop review from this book you are going to be sorely disappointed.Don't get me wrong, it's nicely written, clear and to the point, but it's much more about "what can be done on Hadoop" than "this is how you can get it done on Hadoop". Yes there are examples, but so basic I would not even call them toy examples. I actually love books that start from the abc, but not the ones that stop there..Maybe a reasonable use case for this book is for a non technical person who needs a "I need to know what are we talking about" kind of overview. For technical people you can save the intro chapters on Hive and Pig, but there's not much else of real value. Pity, because I really like the author's style..I don 't even know if writing a really useful book on Hadoop is even possible, given that it would turn out to be about 1500 pages..Maybe a "learning path" made by a sequence of a few books specializing on each of its most fundamental components would be a good idea..

I got this book from Barnes and Nobles, paying full price for it, and thinking it would have something in it, not easily searchable in an online Google search. I was wrong. I paid $50 for this book before my online Large Scale Data Storage Systems Graduate course. As my course is over, I was thumbing through the pages, and in hour 3 of the 24 hours, there are some pages devoted to installing HDFS onto your PC or VM. I was using VirtualBox. I suppose if I could get through some of the steps in the book step-by-step to have a final result of installation I would have rated this five stars, but it failed me. I have other options, but I wanted the Apache HDFS version. So I get to step 2, and don't knowif that is an 'el' or 'one' in, " .../sysct1.conf" and "...= 1" so I used both in the Linux CLI. Then moving along through the steps to page 29 on step 16, apparently the JAVA_HOME location wasn't set right, and is DNE by the program, so I couldn't move on through steps 17 through 26. I tried googling results, but this is why I got the book, none of them worked. I will move through the book on my remaining seven weeks break and see if it teaches me Hadoop thoroughly, and if not these three stars will remain in my review of this book, otherwise maybe more or less, depending on if I learn more than the course I was in.

This book covers a variety of topics with barely enough examples. It's good for the familiarization of various topics related to Spark. It's nothing too advanced though. A great starting point.For more answers, prepare to google for it.
