Qualitative dissertations are inherently difficult. The process of explaining the methodology is difficult and then explaining how everything comes together can be confusing. It's also really difficult to do all of this in a dissertation that traditionally has very defined chapters. This book focuses specifically on the methodology chapter, but it also goes through the others just so that you know where you are going. Each chapter within this book focuses on the parts that are traditionally in a methodology chapter. It asks questions about who, where, and when, along with focusing on explaining why you focus on each of those questions. It also spends time on how to data collect and then explain your process. Analyzing the data is also discussed in a chapter towards the end. Honestly, this is a great tool to help really plan out a qualitative dissertation if that is what a student wants to do.

Back in grad school, I took a single (required) course in qualitative methods and while enjoyable enough, that was the sum total of my prior exposure. The entire emphasis was on quantitative research so admittedly, my actual exposure has been limited. After 20 odd years I've found a growing interest in qualitative research and have been on a bit of a binge with it lately simply to get up to speed which is where this book comes in; no, I'm not planning on doing another dissertation but was simply intrigued by the idea and thought a step by step approach to the methodology would be a great way to learn for my own edification. I would highly recommend this for college level students working on a dissertation (or contemplating one). Clear, comprehensive and well organized.

I liked the approachof this book. A dissertation is a chllenging enterprise.The focus is on qualitative methodolgy. It is defined and described in a usable method. This is an accessible resource that explains what the student needs to know. It is an intelligent approach to streaamlining the methodology chapter.
