Acclaimed illustrator John Porcellino was born in Chicago, in 1968, and has been writing, drawing, and publishing minicomics, comics, and graphic novels for over twenty-five years. His celebrated self-published series King-Cat Comics, begun in 1989, has inspired a generation of cartoonists. Diary of a Mosquito Abatement Man, a collection of King-Cat stories about Porcellino's experiences as a pest control worker, won an Ignatz Award in 2005, and Perfect Example, first published in 2000, chronicles his struggles with depression as a teenager. King-Cat Classix and Map of My Heart, published in 2007/2009 by Drawn & Quarterly, offer a comprehensive overview of the zine's first sixty-one issues, while Thoreau at Walden (2008) is a poetic expression of the great philosopher?s experience and ideals. According to cartoonist Chris Ware, "John Porcellino's comics distill, in just a few lines and words, the feeling of simply being alive" and Entertainment Weekly proclaimed that "Porcellino is a master at miniature poignance." Porcellino's work has been translated into French, German, Spanish, Swedish, Italian, and Korean. Pop Sandbox is an award winning multimedia production and publishing company. Their inaugural release, KENK: A Graphic Portrait, is a ground-breaking 300-page journalistic comic book surrounding "the world's most prolific bicycle thief" (The New York Times) built from more 30 hours of documentary footage taken over the year leading up to his high-profile arrest. KENK was officially released in Toronto, Canada on May 6 2010 at a packed event that attracted more than 500 people during the Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival and Toronto Comic Arts Festival. In these sparse but quietly powerful stories, four survivors of suicide attempts reflect on the events & emotions that brought them to their crucial moment, and how they felt afterwards. Their words are unpolished, bare as bones, and all the more effective for that in conveying the overwhelming pointlessness & pain of living one more day. John Porcellino's minimalist art style works especially well here, capturing despair & anguish in drawings that at first seem almost childish, but actually carry a great deal of subtlety & weight. I think this simple approach really brings the reader closer to sensing what the world must seem like to those so desperately eager to leave it -- a world that's so radically & horribly different from the one we know, but is still recognizably our own. Highly recommended!

I originally found this book on a whim at a comic shop and didn't buy it then. But I kept thinking about it because of how in depth, differentiated, and personal all of the experiences were. It is talking about suicide ideation, abuse, substance abuse, self-injury, and the attempt itself. Even if the message of continuing life whole-heartedly is only prevalent in one case, it is an honest depiction about how depression, and thinking about death, works. From a mental health/psychology perspective, this is an easy-to-understand book that could serve well for validating clients in a therapeutic setting and opening up the topic. These subjects are hard to talk about, especially knowing how sensitive a topic it is. It's a short read. But I find something new about it with every time I flip through it.

This story was well written and captivating, and it is a TRUE story. The artwork is minimal, but planned. The stories are sad and reviling. A very emotionally human book. Short, Sad, and Sweet.

I really liked the concept of the book. I think they did a good job conveying how people feel about themselves when they struggle with depression - the worthlessness, the self-loathing. And, each person definitely had a story to tell about their troubled path leading to their attempt. These are wonderful and courageous people.But, it didn't seem like they wrote this in a way that showed whether or how each of the people had an epiphany of any sort "the next day." For a person who thinks about suicide nearly every day, I'm not sure this book will serve as an inspiration to live. It just sort of seems to brush past any type of meaningful recovery with platitudes like, "You only get one life," and "You're not meant to be dead." Believe me, as a person who has frequently contemplates suicide, this wouldn't dissuade me in the slightest.Maybe another iteration of the book could be devoted to more thoroughly showcasing the courage it takes to continue living after an attempted suicide. How did they keep going after all that? What was their real motivation to live? How did they come to terms with the abuse of their past? Just in my opinion, take it for what it's worth, I think you have to really dig into the hard work, the meaningful inspiration and the profound courage that lives within us all to really make the point that making it to the next day is worth it.I hate writing negative reviews, but I just didn't want anyone to pick up this book hoping it might prevent a friend or family member from committing suicide. I'm not sure it's deep enough.

The Next Day is both a graphic novella and an interactive animated documentary website co-produced by the National Film Board of Canada. Both depict the suicide attempts of four individuals, and ask the question: "What if they had just waited one more day?" The purpose of both mediums is to raise awareness of suicide, and how to prevent it.The graphic novel is little more than a comic strip montage. The four life stories of Jenn, Chantel, Ryan, and Tina - all who survived their suicide attempts - are interwoven together by similar themes and events, including sexual abuse by a relative, bipolar disorder, depression, and substance abuse. This method, however, disturbs the flow of each individual's story, and prevents us from getting a clear picture of each person's situation.The concept works better in the form of an interactive website because you actually hear the stories of these four people, rather than just reading about them. The interactive "experience" begins by showing us a house, very simply drawn, very spare in detail. There's a front yard with shrubs, a swing set out front. Emotionally charged words appear on the screen, words like "fear," "death," "helpless," etc. As you click on a word, the site takes you through an animated tour of the empty house. Hallways are lost in shadow, and poorly affixed wallpaper begins to deteriorate. While all this is going on, you hear about the lives of four different people, some who had happy childhoods, others who had miserable ones - but all of which follow the inevitable path to self-destruction.The worsening of depression is depicted in the animation by the presence of a storm. As the interviewees speak of contemplating suicide, the storm begins: water rattles against the windows and shadows deepen. But, as the website reminds us, things won't always be this bad. As this portion of the animation wraps up, we are shown a calm scene: water drips from the roof of the house onto the ground and onto the seat of the swing set. In the background, the four survivors deliver their closing comments on their life choices and what they are doing to deal with mental illness.So skip the graphic novel, and go straight to the website.
